The Scotch Whisky Region of Speyside
Speyside is the most populated Scotch whisky region with over
60 distilleries working in the area. The distilleries benefit from their
proximity to fresh water sources, and the surrounding lands which are fertile for growing barley.
The region is located in the northeast of Scotland surrounding the River Spey; it's a sub-region to the neighbouring Highlands because of the high density of distilleries in the area.
The whiskies from this region are known for prolific use of sherry casks as the area was a once a popular docking point for ships carrying sherry in casks, so think rich flavours of dried fruit with spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.
