The Scotch Whisky Region of Islay
The rainy island of Islay (pronounced eye-la) is situated on the West coast of Scotland - one of the southernmost of the Inner Hebridean islands.
In total, there are nine active distilleries on this island which measures only 25 by 15 miles. The whisky industry is the Islands second largest employer after agriculture.
Many believe that Islay was home to Irish monks in the early 1300's and they were the first to distill whisky in Scotland.
The continually wet conditions on the island has meant there are few trees and much of the land is a bog.
Using the resources available to the Islanders, peat (soil made from decayed moss matter) has historically been used as their main source of fuel, and specifically, to light the fires used to dry malted barley.
The distinctive whisky from Islay is renowned for its flavour profile full of medicinal, earthy peat with coastal saltiness.
